Biography:
Jean-Mary Tjiohimba is a dedicated advocate for Indigenous rights and community empowerment. As the Director of The San Vision Foundation (TSVF), she has led initiatives benefiting the !Xun and Khwe communities, including establishing a community library with internet access, a digital resource centre, and an Early Childhood Development project. Her efforts have created employment opportunities for over 100 individuals in Platfontein, many experiencing formal employment for the first time. Jean-Mary represents TSVF and her community on global platforms, such as COP28 and the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, advocating for Indigenous inclusion in climate and gender policies.
Project/Initiative Information:
Under Jean-Mary’s leadership, TSVF has implemented community agricultural initiatives, including school and community centre vegetable gardens and a community farming project, enhancing food security, employment, and education in Platfontein. The community centre hosts a vibrant reading club, serving up to 60 children in collaboration with the local school, promoting literacy and educational engagement. Jean-Mary has also expanded library services in partnership with the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture, ensuring community access to books, digital resources, and internet connectivity.
